Sonic movie poster is a spot-on homage
The new Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie poster is one big reference to the classic Sonic 2 box art.
The artwork, which debuted upon Sonic 2's release 30 years ago, depicts Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik leering over a checkered "2" pulled straight from the classic Sega Genesis cover. Front and center are Sonic and Tails, though the movie poster has them in much more action-oriented poses than the original game.
There's also the addition of a location instead of an ombre-styled backdrop like the original box art featured. It appears Sonic and Tails are standing in front of a waterfall with a glowing structure behind them as well during golden hour. Sonic and Tails are soaking up the lighting, natch.
Everything about the promotional artwork seems meant to evoke that specific type of Sonic nostalgia fans carry with them, from the cast and characters and that huge "2" to the entire vibe. Even the movie's tagline, "Welcome to the Next Level", references a classic Sega Genesis ad campaign.
In this sequel, Sonic has settled down in Green Hills, but is eager to prove himself as a hero. The return of Dr. Robotnik, who's now working with Knuckles, marks the perfect time for him to reveal how tough he can be. Sonic gears up with his own sidekick, Tails, to set off on a journey to procure a mystical emerald that Robotnik and Knuckles are after before they get it first.
The poster is just the latest piece of promotional material ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 2's theatrical release next month on April 8. Given the response to the original film, we could have another fun video game adaptation on our hands, though it's still a bit too early to tell. If nothing else though, it looks like a good reason to sit around and think about the good old days of Sonic.
Paramount Releases Final Trailer For Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Paramount Pictures and Sega have just teased a new trailer for the upcoming movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2, due out in cinemas late March/early April, depending on your location.
If you slow the trailer down on YouTube, you'll be able to see a series of new never-before-seen footage of the anticipated sequel. There's even a shot of the meme Sanic Hedgehog in there along with Sonic's original movie design.
Amazing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie
The second Sonic movie is almost here, and ahead of its release Paramount is dialling up the retro factor. Paramount's latest take on the video game movie – Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – is less than a month away from premiering. In efforts to generate a little bit more hype for the project, the studio has released a new trailer and (more importantly) a new poster for the film.
As you can see from the image embedded below and the comparison at the header of this page, the folks at Paramount have drawn on classic Sonic art for inspiration for this one. The poster design mimics the old, classic Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic 2 art, with Robotnik's angry little face seething in the corner as Sonic and Tails stand smugly in the foreground. If you look closely, you'll see Knuckles hiding in there, too.
You can also check out a new trailer for the film – featuring Sonic, Tails and Doctor Robotnik and Idirs Elba as Knuckles all going wild over the Chaos Emerald – below.
“After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home when they go on vacation,” reads a synopsis for the film.
“But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his old sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.”
If this is leaving you all gooey-eyed and reminiscing about the 'golden age' of Sonic games, don't fret: last year, Sega announced Sonic Origins – a compilation game set to feature Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. It's the first time we're going to see a proper rerelease of Sonic 3 for a very long time, so it's nice to see beats of the story getting some love in the Sonic Extended Universe (I can't believe I just wrote that).
Sonic The Hedgehog 2: Final trailer
Fresh off releasing a teaser for the final trailer yesterday, Paramount Pictures has released the final trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and it looks like the sequel is going to offer up even more sonic speed adventure compared to its predecessor.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “The world’s favorite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. From the filmmakers behind The Fast and the Furious and Deadpool, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub and Jim Carrey returning, alongside new additions Shemar Moore, with Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails.”
The first Sonic The Hedgehog had quite the road to financial success which began with widespread negativity following the first trailer for the film that led to fan backlash and the film being delayed from its initial release date. Being that video game films tend to be a bust at the box office and with critics, all signs pointed to Sonic being DOA but the film was greeted with a positive reception, with Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Dr. Robotnik getting notable praise. Sonic The Hedgehog also had the distinction of being one of the final notable films to play without much interruption in theaters before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed every major title that followed in 2020. The film ultimately grossed $148.9 million at the domestic box office and $319.7 million worldwide.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Movie Trailer Brings the Heat Ahead of April Premiere
The first live-action Sonic movie doesn't feel that long ago, but Paramount and SEGA are getting ready to roll out the red carpet for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The sequel, which introduces Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) into the story, debuts in cinemas on 8th April, and the final trailer for the flick has just been released.
The film follows on from where the first leaves off. Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) makes his return, this time allied with the aforementioned bright red echidna, fighting for control of a chaos emerald. It'll fall to Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tom (James Marsden) and the rest of his pals to stop the baddies with the power of friendship, or something. It looks like it'll be a more action-packed movie than the last one, although the trailer shows it'll still make time for some goofy jokes.
Sonic 2 Movie Prequel Comic Will Feature A Robotnik Story
Sonic's second movie outing is almost here, and in case you missed it, IDW is releasing an official "pre-quill" comic - linking together the first and second big-screen adventures of the blue blur.
It'll arrive in stores later this month on 23rd March for $6.99 USD, and contains five stories across 40 pages - with art from Tracey Yardley, Adam Bryce Thomas and Evan Stanley. And here's the really exciting announcement revealed by the comic's writer Keil Phegley - Robotnik's actor, Jim Carrey, was involved.
"If you need any more incentive to order a copy of Sonic The Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill comic, the Robotnik story was spearheaded by the absolute G.O.A.T. Mr. Jim Carrey! It's really weird & dope."
A fan asked what exactly this meant, and Phegley explained how Jim sent the team a concept which was then transformed into a script with dialogue and some fantastic art:
"Hard to describe without spoiling anything, and I REALLY want people to enjoy the stories fresh. But basic is that Jim had a concept for Robotnik and sent us (via producer) a rough outline of about a page. I turned it into a 5-page script w dialogue etc, & the art team nailed it."
