Tribeca Festival Sets Jennifer Lopez Netflix Doc ‘Halftime’ as Opening Night Film

The June 8 premiere of the project focusing on the evolution of the Bronx-born artist will take place at the United Palace in Washington Heights. The Tribeca Film Festival is bringing Bronx-born superstar Jennifer Lopez back to her native city with its opening night film: the Netflix documentary Halftime, about the second half of the artist’s career.


Halftime, which will hit Netflix on June 14, follows Lopez as she reflects on her milestones and evolution as an artist and navigates the second half of her career. The project, directed by Tribeca alum Amanda Micheli, focuses on Lopez’s hard work and creative and cultural contributions as an artist and performer as well as her evolution as a Latina, a mother and a woman taking more agency in her career and using her voice for a greater purpose.


The premiere is set to take place on Wednesday June 8 at the United Palace in Washington Heights.

To have the opportunity to share this film on the big screen with a New York audience is a dream come true,” Micheli said in a statement.

The New York film festival announced its opening night film Wednesday. While Tribeca has traditionally been held in spring, this year it shifts to the summer, opening on June 8.


Organizers said “Halftime” follows Lopez “as she reflects on her milestones and evolution as an artist and navigates the second half of her career.” In 2020, Lopez hosted the Super Bowl halftime show alongside Shakira.


The film, which will debut June 14 on Netflix, will premiere at the United Palace in Manhattan's Washington Heights. Tribeca opened last year in the same theater with the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical adaptation “In the Heights.”


Director Amanda Micheli said in a statement that it's “so fitting to be celebrating this critical milestone in Jennifer’s life and career just miles from where she grew up. To have the opportunity to share this film on the big screen with a New York audience is a dream come true.”


Lopez, a Bronx native, r ecently suggested that she and Ben Affleck are engaged. A video posted on her members-only fan newsletter, showed Lopez gazing at a large green ring on her left hand.

Jennifer Lopez’s Netflix documentary “Halftime” is confirmed to kick off the 2022 Tribeca Festival on June 8. The film, directed by Tribeca alum Amanda Micheli (“Haveababy”), will host its world premiere at the festival before premiering on the streamer June 14.


“Halftime” follows J.Lo’s rise to international stardom as the “Marry Me” star reflects on her milestones, evolution, and legacy as she navigates the second half of her iconic career. Tribeca will host the film’s premiere at the United Palace in Washington Heights, just a few subway stops away from Lopez’s native Bronx.


Per the festival, “Halftime” offers an “intimate peek behind the curtain revealing the grit and determination that makes Jennifer Lopez the icon she is, from her performances onscreen and on stages around the world, to her Super Bowl Halftime show, to the recent Presidential inauguration. The documentary focuses on an international superstar who has inspired people for decades with her perseverance, creative brilliance, and cultural contributions.  And it’s only the beginning. ‘Halftime’ serves as the kickoff to the second half of Lopez’s life, as she lays bare her evolution as a Latina, a mother, and an artist, taking agency in her career and using her voice for a greater purpose.”


The 2022 Tribeca Festival will feature 12 days of events and experiences across New York City with a curated lineup of films, live concerts, performances, talks, and demonstrations. Venues include the Beacon Theater, the United Palace, Pier 57, Spring Studios, BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, SVA Theatre, Village East by Angelika, Cinépolis Chelsea, Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place, and Battery Park City.
